Description
If you know you know…
But in case you don’t, this is a rare 1960s lamp base sculpture by British artist, Brian Willsher.
Willsher (1930-2010) was a highly regarded 20th Century sculptor from South London, known for his method of using a bandsaw to create his works.
He enjoyed a string of successful exhibitions in the 1960s, as well as five consecutive Royal Academy of Arts Summer shows.
His work was admired by, among others, artist Henry Moore, and a 2021 exhibition of Willsher’s work in central London has further added to his prestige.
These awesome lamp bases were commissioned by British department store, Heal’s, in the 1960s, and retailed in very limited numbers through their flagship store on Tottenham Court Road, London.
This large, unique and particularly impressive example is one of the best pieces of Willsher’s work I have owned.
Base height 37.5cm (56.5cm to top of lamp holder) x W14cm x D9cm
*although the lamp is in working order it has the original 1960s wiring, and so is being sold solely as an art piece.
Sensible offers considered.
