Description

A rare and ultra stylish 1950s coffee table, designed by Edward Ihnatowicz.

Produced by Mars Furniture and retailed through London department store, Heal’s, this classic ‘Atom’ design features a circular glass top floating within a brass and black metal frame. The legs curve under then gather and cross at the centre, and are capped off with beautifully patinaed brass orbs.

This thoroughly 1950s coffee table is a little work of sculpture in its own right, and it comes in excellent vintage condition with only minor wear to the frame, and a new 6mm toughened glass top.

H40cm x W66cm x D66cm

Polish sculptor, Ihnatowicz, (1926-1988) was a pioneering figure in the world of Cybernetic Art; a movement which brought together various disciplines including art, science and engineering.
A refugee of the Second World War, Ihnatowicz arrived in Britain in 1943, and attended the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford.
During the following years he focused on furniture design and interiors, before receiving a commission in 1969 from electronics company, Philips, to create ‘The Senster’ – a 15ft x 8ft hydraulic robot resembling a metal dinosaur!
Using sound and movement sensors, The Senster was able to react to the behaviour of those around it, and was one of the first interactive robotic works of its kind.
Although dismantled by Philips in the mid 1970s, you can find a 2017 reconstruction of the Senster on YouTube… impressive, and little bit sinister!
