Description

I’ve seen a number of these scratch-built wooden toys before and they’ve always been dogs… this little charmer has some distinctly feline characteristics!

Produced as home projects throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, these articulated wooden toys can be found in a variety of different styles, and often have those distinctive square collars. They’re now considered little works of folk art, and are highly collectible.
This particularly good example has a beautifully ebonised finish, with hinged joints that allow the head, ears, legs and tail to all move independently, while the patinaed screws-heads and washers give it an almost robotic appearance.
It’s hard to put an age on this but stylistically it looks 1930s – 1940s, is possibly even earlier and certainly pre-1960s.
For me it’s one of the best things I’ve ever owned, but perhaps I’m just easily pleased!
And yes it is tempting to level up those peepers isn’t it… but I think we’ll leave it in all its original boss-eyed glory.
