Description

A good quality abstract sculpture by Polish-born artist, Witold Gracjan Kawalec.

Carved from ebony and mounted on a marble base, this flowing, sinuous form beautifully displays the grain and contrasting colours of the tropical hardwood, and is engraved ‘W. G. Kawalec’ at the base.

Witold Gracjan Kawalec (1922–2003) was a prominent Polish-born sculptor and RAF fighter pilot whose life and art were deeply shaped by his World War II experiences.

He was born in Wilno, Poland and fought with the Polish resistance during World War II.
He was briefly captured by Russian soldiers but later trained as a night fighter pilot with the Royal Air Force, and at RAF Newton married a WRAF, Danuta Banszel.

After the War they settled in Nottingham, England where he studied sculpture at Nottingham College of Art, going on to open his first studio in 1953.
Much of his work was carved in local alabaster or limestone, and he exhibited at both the Royal Academy of Arts summer exhibition and the The City of Paris Museum of Modern Art.
He also completed several public commissions including the sculpture at St Christopher’s Hospice, Sydenham… which is a nice connection for a South London boy like me!
