Description

A very beautiful 1960s wall mirror by London artist, Ron Hitchins (1926-2019).

Each of these 26 terracotta tiles is a little work of art in its own right, hand-sculpted and fired in a kiln in the basement of his Hackney home… each as unique as the man himself.
The wooden frame’s design looks to have been achieved by layering different coloured paints before etching out this beautiful gold, Islamic inspired motif.

Hitchins was a fascinating character, known for his passion of flamenco dancing and who, In his early life, embellished and sold shirts on the markets of East London.
In the 1950s he channeled his talents into creating unique works of art from his lively home in Hackney. He often used these Picasso and Hepworth inspired tiles to adorn mirrors and picture frames and even a four-poster bed, while others were incorporated into panels and wall reliefs.

He led a long, colourful and unconventional life up until his death in 2019 at the age of 93, and his art reflects a snapshot in London’s history where creativity and freedom of expression were flourishing.

Today his work continues to increase in importance and desirability, and with a new permanent exhibition of his work at the V&A East (see final pic), his star looks set to rise further.

H48cm x W43cm x D4.5cm

Very good vintage condition with 26 immaculate tiles, a crystal clear mirror plate and only minor wear to the wooden frame.
A hand written message by the artist on the back is faded but still visible, and reads;
